Civilian Life 101: Adjusting

By Jim Thorpe

Veterans day is a great day for all of the United States of America to come together and celebrate those who have sacrificed leaving there families, to come closer as a country, and to help commemorate the soldiers and those serving us now and those who gave their life for our wonderful country.

Whether you are a veteran who was in a war, or just someone who wants to have a good veterans day, being actively involved is the first part of having a great veterans day. Many communities have things such as Veterans Day programs or services that you can go to, to pay tribute to those that are serving.

One of the biggest benefits that can come in college from military experience is the exchange of that experience for college credit. Because the experience of veterans in the military is so vast and covers such a wide variety of topics, these experiences can often be used for college credit.

Time in the military is important and encompasses a wide variety of training. The many levels of training in the military can also be compensated with college credit, and as you learn of the potential to gain credit for your military experiences, you should be able to also decrease your stress and increase your passion for your future life and career.

After so much service and involvement to the country, you may want to stay involved. There are still many ways in your community that you can stay actively involved. Not only does community involvement allow you to still serve your country, but you can also meet friends, and different people who can be a support group for you.

The United States of America has set up many different programs and systems to help you when you return. There are discount in stores and services for veterans. There are also VA loans that are accessible for veterans. You helped the country succeed, and consequently, the USA wants to give back to you. Take advantage of VA loans, or VA home loans as you are getting back into the swing of things.

There are many counselors and other people that can help assist you when you are struggling with the worst of getting back into regular civilian life. You don't need to struggle. When necessary, be humble and go see a specialist such as a counselor who deals with this. Especially after life changing experiences, it can be so difficult to try and assimilate back into regular life. There is no shame in going to a specialist.

In the end, it doesn't matter too much what you do, but try to do something. Make it a special day. Don't throw off Veterans Day as any other day of the year. The country is trying to help those who served with VA loans, discounts, and other service to try and help them. So make sure that you also try and do what you can and celebrate Veterans Day.
