Understanding Basic Fire Clean-Up

By Maryl Joop

One of the best things about owning a home is that you have an opportunity to improve your investment. You can add value to your home by simply renovating, improving, or adding on better things to your home.

If you need to refinance your current home or purchase a new home, now is a great time to do it. For service members who are aware of VA home loans, many of them think that now is not a great time to secure a VA loan.

However, they are incorrect. The economy may not be the best it has been, but now is still a great time to secure a VA home loan.

Mortgage rates for homes are currently extremely low. There are also thousands of homes selling for prices that are highly discounted.

When a potential buyer walks in and finds the house in disarray, their opinions of the place are going to drop immediately, meaning that they won't be willing to pay for the asking price. You could even lose the sale altogether.

Also, again, please consider hiring trained professionals, if nothing else for your own safety as fire restoration can be dangerous.

Give them a good show and they'll be willing to spend more. Second, patch and paint the house. If there are any holes or ruined paint throughout the house, patch it and paint it. Matching a paint color can be difficult so it may require a new coat altogether.

As you can see, there are many options available for individuals who qualify to receive a VA home loan. Sometimes it appears that conventional loans offer more affordable rates.

But usually with conventional loans, there is a catch. They usually require you to have a credit score of 720 or higher to be able to qualify for a cheaper rate.

The thing to remember with VA home loans is that they are financed by the government. There is less risk associated with the loan, so usually you do not need to be charged as much as you would for a conventional loan.

Fourth, cut your energy costs. A family moving in will be interested in saving money on their utilities and the fact that your home will cost them less every month will be a major selling point.

Beyond wearing gloves, the next basic action a homeowner can take in repairing and restoring their possessions is to clean all of the soot from the fire damaged dwelling as soon as possible following the fire. This can be best accomplished by the use of a dry or barely damp sponge.

Fifth and finally, add something that's missing. Build a deck, remodel the home to include an island, or add energy efficient insulation. Find something that you wish your home had and add it. With the right preparation, a few tools from Home Depot, and a few weekends of hard work, you could add something of value onto your home.

We appreciate and revere the honorable service of every person who has served in the U.S. military.
