Choosing Comprehensive Home Insurance Makes Sense

By Clea Spahn

Comprehensive insurance is the most widely used type for homeowners, and this will offer protection for you home, possessions, living expenses and liability. Savvy insurance buyers need to make sure they have the right coverage in each category.

All perils, otherwise known as comprehensive insurance, covers pretty much everything with some notable exceptions like earthquakes, settling, floods, and wear and tear, and deterioration of mechanical or other variety, to name a few examples,

Most comprehensive home insurance policies include contents insurance, which covers the cost of replacing your belongings, up to a set amount. Closely examine what is excluded in your comprehensive insurance package before you complete the purchase. Normally, you can pay extra to add riders to your policy to cover items on the exclusion list.

Gadgets could actually be covered by your comprehensive home insurance package already. But take a closer look at this anyway. House fires and theft of property are all that certain policies will cover, so double check the list so you know what is included.

A guaranteed-replacement policy replaces your home, even if the costs to do so exceed the maximum amount on your policy. This insurance pays for replacement using the same or similar materials, so some older homes may not qualify. There are several kinds of home insurance, but guaranteed-replacement policies are the most expensive.

If a homeowner wants protection from lawsuits that can occur when a person is injured on their property, comprehensive personal liability insurance can provide this so that a fall or other kind of injury doesn't end up costing a homeowner an expensive lawsuit. The injured person has their lost wages and medical bills covered, they have rehabilitation, and if a settlement is awarded, that will be covered by the liability insurance.

When the damages are severe enough, you and your family may have to live somewhere else for a time, and those living expenses are covered by comprehensive insurance. While your home is being repaired, you could find yourself in a rental suite or a hotel room for a while. However, limits exist for this coverage.

Keep in mind, the majority of disasters are covered; things like damages that are caused by a tornado or hurricane are protected by the included windstorm peril on the policy. Damage from earthquakes or flooding are not generally covered by the average home insurance policy. Keep in mind that when a homeowner makes a lot of claims on their insurance policy, generally more that 2 or 3, the premiums will go up, and there could be a cancellation of the policy. You are best advised to get a policy with a high deductible, so that you've got no reason to file lower-cost claims that will raise your premiums or lead to future cancellation of your policy.
