Tip For Cutting Food Costs

By Cornelius Nunev

Most American employees have not seen a wage boost in some time. But the price of anything continues to fill. Some food prices have jumped because of climate change, drought and political factors. But consumers can take some good steps to drastically decrease those food expenses, and eat better at the same time.

Cut food expenses rule number one

It is always cheaper to cook and eat at home than it is to pay someone else to do it. You will know precisely what is in your meal, and it will cost less than going out to eat.

If time is a problem, you can usually get a crockpot. It takes about two minutes to throw some vegetables and beef in the crockpot for a delicious meal later.

Paying too much for beef

Many people spend a lot of their money on meat. As Americans, we sure like our meat in every meal. You do not have to go vegan, but you can just spend a couple of nights a week preparing meals without any type of meat in it. You could also make your beef go farther by preparing meals with beef in it rather than making beef the primary course.

Say no to organic

By avoiding organic food, you will save a ton of cash. Some people think that organic food is the only way to go because it is really healthy, but there's actually no evidence to support organic food being any healthier than any other food. On top of that, it is always more expensive than commercially grown food. Consider frozen vegetables; they will last longer and have more nutrition sometimes.

Hydrated body essential

It's all your body wants to stay replenished, and it's free. If you don't trust the tap water where you live, consider a water filter rather than bottled water. It is typically just filtered tap water anyway. Soda pop and other sugary drinks are costly and are an easy way to pack on unneeded calories.

Never drink alcohol at home if you want to start saving to. Only do it socially.

Price of commercially prepared foods really high

There are many people who like prepackaged foods, but they are pretty costly and not very healthy. Just make food at home from scratch.

Get a menu prepared

Every pay day, check out what you have left in the pantry. Then plan out your meals for the next two weeks (or whatever the length of time between your paydays), starting with the items you have on hand. Then make a list of what you still have to prepare those prepared meals. Go to the store and close your eyes when going past the come-on items on the end caps. Impulse getting is fatal. Stick to the list and only the list, using coupons and being thrifty in your brand selection. Generic is generally just as good as name brands.

To further decrease shopping expenses, you might want to consider getting a membership to a warehouse store like Costco or Sam's Club.

Homemade lunches

It is healthier to make a lunch at home instead of going out, so make sure you do that whenever possible.

Think to the future

Exchange produce with your friends and save money by planting a garden and getting others to do the same.
