Coin Shows

By Sienna Nalin

Coin shows are the go to place to be able to meet other collectors, investors, dealers, everyone. With coin shows it is a much better place to invest in coins because you are able to visually see what you may be purchasing and exam it. Read the tips below and you will be able to have a successful trip when going to a coin show.

When it comes to buying and selling coins, the best place to do that is at coin shows. Coin shows are great for this because you can actually see the item in person rather than taking a gamble with an internet ad. Here are some great tips when it comes to attending coins shows.

1. Organize prior to the show. That means that you must know what you currently hold, and what items you would like to add or delete from your collection. That sounds basic, but so many collectors attend a show, and forget their own collection list. If you don't have an inventory list, stop reading till you take inventory and complete one! Be sure to take any reference materials with you.

2. When going to coin shows do not be excessive in the coins that you are looking into buying. Narrow down the coins you are looking for to two series. You do not want to leave with a whole bunch of coins and later regret those investments.

3. Coin shows are more than just buying coins, but also making business connections. Coin collecting is an investment so you might as well get to know the dealers. The reason you want to do this is because one of them may be from your area. If you both mesh well, that means you now have a dealer that you can go to for coins.

4. Compare. Look carefully at each dealers display. Don't be in a hurry to buy. Take your time to study and compare. Compare the coin, not just the price. Since this is a life-long hobby, most likely your purchase(s) will be with you for a very long time. Be sure to check carefully, both sides, (and the edges) of the coin. It is not impolite to ask a dealer if you can compare his/her coin with another dealer. Sometimes a dealer specializes in an area, but has a few "extras" that came with his last purchase. Don't be shy about asking if they have an item that you may not see. Many dealers have much more behind their table, than showing in their showcases.

5. As I said earlier you want to go into a coin show looking for two to three series depending on the size of the coin show. You do not want to go into a coin show and just be looking for one particular coin. This is the worst thing you could do because you may not find that coin and then it will be a waste of a trip.

When attending a coin show you have to be picky. You are the one spending the money right? So, why not inspect what you are looking at before buying it. You have to make sure to get your money's worth and more from your investment.
