Three Types of Home Insurance Policies Explained

By Alina H. Winamaker

Your current home insurance policy may not be providing you with the protection you need. Traditional insurance providers most commonly offer the following three types of home insurance policies:

At the top of the list are perils. These policies specify the types of loss that you're protected against. Typically, this includes fire or lightning, explosion, smoke, falling objects, impact by aircraft or land vehicle, riot, vandalism or malicious acts, some types of water damage, windstorm or hail, and theft or attempted theft. You are only protected in these cases if you actually sustain damage to your property or home. Since accidental fire is on the list of perils, usually damages from this will be completely covered by the policy. For example, if a water line breaks in your home, this is how it is handled. Basically, you must pay for expensive water damages yourself, unless this is named on the list of perils in your policy. Knowing what is in your perils list is important so that you have an idea of what you are protected against.

The second kind of coverage is called comprehensive. On the other end of the spectrum are comprehensive policies, which are also referred to as all-risk policies. These policies protect you against all types of loss except those specifically excluded. Damages from landslides or snow slides are not included in these, as well as wear and tear or acts of war or terrorism. Even with the exclusions, comprehensive policies provide you with the best protection and you shouldn't settle for less.

The broad form is the last kind of coverage we will be talking about. This kind of coverage protects like comprehensive on your home, and your property is protected by the list of named perils. While this may seem like an interesting idea, it's actually quite silly. We will look at the example of you accidentally break your television while moving it while painting. Your television would not be covered under a broad form policy in this situation, but damages to your hardwood floors would be.

It's confusing, right? Comprehensive protection is important, be certain that you your policy has this kind of coverage. In cases where you have inferior coverage, if costly damages happen, you will be left to pay for it on your own.

If there are certain kinds of protection that you need, be sure that they are covered in your comprehensive policy and if not, get what you need by adding it on at an additional fee. Earthquake protection, and certain kinds of water damages are not included in the coverage provided in many standard insurance policies. Sometimes when repairing damages, a homeowner is required to update their home to current building standards, and these policies often do not cover this, and it could be an enormous sum of money.. Having proper full protection should be very high on your list of priorities.

A good home insurance policy ensures you're well protected against all major types of losses, including earthquakes. The expenses in upgrading to building code standards after damages should be included, as well as for water damages of any kind.
