By Enid Hinton

People looking for a permanent home want certain things - like low crime rates, adequate public services, and congenial neighborhoods. This desire for a good place to live makes homes for sale Davenport IA more attractive than most. This riverfront city has it all: historic significance, stable communities, lots of leisure pursuits, institutions of higher education, and a high 'livability' rating.

This is the county seat of Scott County, Davenport and is right on the Mississippi River, which marks the border of Illinois and Iowa. It has around 100,000 residents. It's growing faster than most metropolitan areas as people discover how much it has to offer. High-end neighborhoods have luxury homes - some dating from the 1800s - while other downtown areas have charming Queen Anne and American Foursquare houses that are perfect for families just starting out or for single professionals.

The job market is equally diverse. There are many high-tech jobs, positions for teachers and professors, and administrative posts in health care services. Manufacturing jobs and retail positions are also plentiful. The median income is relatively low, which keeps home prices and the cost of living lower, as well.

However, the level of public services is high. There are 27 parks open to the public, and over twelve miles of recreational paths for walking, bike riding, and hiking. A professional police force and fire and rescue crew keeps the populace safe. As a university town, Davenport has many things to do and see. There are several large annual music festivals, and the city is home to the Pirates, a Class A minor league baseball team.

There are several distinct areas of town. The East Side overlooks the Mississippi and has many large homes in the Victorian, Tudor Revival, and Queen Anne styles. The area is high above the river, keeping the historic homes safe from the dangers of flooding. Many of the older parks are ringed with stately homes.

Smaller, one or one-and-a-half story houses are clustered in the central and western parts of the city. They were originally homes for the German workers who powered the industries of Davenport. These more modest houses are predominantly Queen Anne or American Foursquare in style. There are larger homes in the carefully-preserved Historic District, which contains a famous botanical garden park of the same name. It is known for its rose and lilac gardens, its beautiful lake, and a Victorian-era conservatory.

Many of these smaller downtown houses have been turned into specialty shops, which give the city a special charm. The famous public library is another reason why residents flock to the central part of town, keeping the downtown area lively and prosperous. The quality of life in Davenport has made it one of the fastest-growing areas of the nation.

House-hunting in this Iowa city is fun over the internet, but it's when you have your feet on the ground that you'll really get to know which neighborhood will have everything you want for yourself and your family.
