Frugal Tips For Back To School Shopping

By Cornelius Nunev

Back to school buying season is here again. However, most American employees are earning about the same as they did a year ago. But prices keep going up. Here are a few suggestions to equip your kids for the next school year without breaking the bank in the process.

Back to school shopping dilemma

Back to school time is the second-largest shopping season of the year, and many stores are offering good deals to lure you in. However, there is one problem.

President and Executive Director of Clarifi, Patricia Hasson, said:

"Wait for the list [of supplies required by the school]. It's easy to be tempted right now with all these great offers that they are advertising right now, except in a lot of cases you're not even sure what the school is going to require you to get."

You can certainly benefit from the deals still, since they are really great bargains.

Back to school electronic devices

When you try to get big discounts on computers, iPads, notebook computers and more, back to school time is the best time of year, according to author David Bach who spoke with NBC recently. He said that families spend $217 on average at back to school time getting brand new electronic devices.

According to Kristen Guilfoos of CBS, that is not actually true. She suggests that the products will not get cheap until Black Friday and the end of Nov. Still, we accept Bach's advice since most students will need their electronics before November hits.

Don't forget online deals and refurbished machines that could be received for a fraction of their cost brand new.

Back to school supplies

For paper, pens, binders and the like, Bach suggests:

"September is the best time to shop for everything else."

He further suggests holding off as long as possible, as the real deals on these things come after the school year begins. Perhaps your children can make do with materials from your home office for a while until the sales kick in.

DealNews.com is the complete opposite of Bach though:

"There's really no incentive to hold off on purchasing school supplies. A lot of stores like Staples and Office Max, they're offering special promotions that just won't get any better after the school year starts."

You do not have to go anywhere special to get paper, pens and pencils. Get bargains or purchase in bulk. You can find many outlets that sell these things for inexpensive.

School clothes

Your kids want the latest fashions. You would like to save money. A compromise needs to be made somewhere, and that comes from diligently seeking out bargains online and in the stores.

According to Sakraida:

"Typically September and October are the best times to buy jeans because they're trying to unload what didn't sell in the back to school sales."

You can get brand names such as Abercrombie for as little as $20 sometimes, so look for major discounts at brand names.
