Why you should visit London

By Peter Frank

Recent figures indicate that London welcomes over 15 million overseas visitors every year, making it the second most visited city in the world. Unsurprisingly, there are many good reasons why it enjoys such popularity.

It's an incredible looking city with an instantly recognisable skyline. There are various places where you can enjoy a bird's eye view, the London Eye, the Monument and the View from The Shard being three more obvious ones, but there are also several restaurants that serve a fine panorama as a side dish.

London has eight royal parks, three of which (Richmond, Greenwich and Bushy) boast their own herds of deer. There are numerous other parks, two botanical gardens and several heaths and commons. Both Hampstead Heath and Primrose Hill offer fantastic views of London.

A river cruise along the Thames is one of the best ways to see London, but we shouldn't forget that there are also more than 100 miles of canals in this city. If you fancy something a little bit different, why not take a trip along Regent's Canal in a narrowboat?

London is a fantastic destination for anyone who enjoys shopping. Some of the most famous shops in the world are to be found here: Harrods, Liberty and Fortnum and Mason to name but three. For those who prefer to shop in a less formal atmosphere, there are markets throughout the city selling just about anything.

You never run out of things to do in London. You can meet beefeaters and ravens at the Tower of London, examine the original engines inside Tower Bridge, test the acoustics in St Paul's Whispering Gallery, scare yourself silly at the London Dungeon or attend a debate at the Houses of Parliament.

Most museums, including the Museum of London and the British and Natural History Museums, are free to enter as are the major art galleries such as the National Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery, Tate Modern and Tate Britain. Also free is the ceremony of the Changing of the Guard, which takes place at Horse Guards Parade every morning.

Many people consider that the theatre of the West End is the jewel in London's crown. There are around 40 historic venues in the area around Drury Lane staging the best in musicals, drama and comedy. For theatre in more intimate surroundings, London also offers a thriving fringe movement.

London offers a wide choice of accommodation, including home stays, budget hostels, self catered apartments, budget hotel chains, boutique hotels and famous five star palaces offering the last word in luxury.

London is a city that is constantly evolving, making it a very exciting place to visit. If you have been here before, then don't expect it to be the same as it was last time!
