The docks that were close to the Thames River were bombed a lot during World War II. For two straight years, between the years 1939 and 1941, the bombs fell non-stop all over the port that was associated with the Thames River. Once the bombing was finally over, the whole area that contained the docks and the port was in horrible condition.
The area around the Thames River was hit with over 900 missiles and a large number of bombs. Though the area of Coombe Hill survived, other areas around the Thames were not so lucky and many neighbourhoods were either wiped out totally or very close to it by the time World War II was over.

Trading seemed to flourish for a while, but an event happened that hit trading hard, and by the end of the 1960's, things began to decline. The introduction of large containers that held huge amounts of cargo took the docks by storm. Containerization was what changed the docks so much and made them almost disappear completely.
Things for the Port of London did not look good all through the 1970's and 1980's. The use of both the port and docks continued to decline. When the use of the port reached its lowest point in 1981, a corporation named the London Docklands Development stepped in and took over. The corporation had an idea, and the idea was to reconstruct the dock and port. The time had come for Port of London to come into modern times. Two years later, in 1983, the Thames Barrier in Woolwich was completed, and the Port of London was now saved.
