Frequently, homestays are international students looking to study in your area and are in need of hosting in a stable, friendly environment where they feel safe and can study in quiet. A family with other children is often a good fit for homestay students, and that is usually where they stay, with a family or a mature couple with extra space.
It could be a university or high school student, or even a young worker that is the homestay, and depending on their needs, it could be a few months or years that they stay.
Remember these important considerations here when deciding whether to commit space in your home for a homestay student to live. Hosts need to be educated on the potential costs that are hard to foresee, that may offset some of the income from the room and board they are receiving from the student.
Considering Potential Problems
Communicate to be understood. Because of the likely language barrier, this could be one of the biggest challenges you could be facing. It is beneficial to break your sentences into simple fragments and avoid complex words. If the student's language skills are exceptionally poor, sometimes it helps for the first while to write down your communication, since it is usually more difficult to speak a language than to read it.
There should be some rules that work to protect both student, and host. Set some rules in place during the interview process with the student and/or their guardian, so that everyone is on the same page. If there is a language barrier then you need to have someone explain the rules to them for you both.
Consequenses for breaking the rules should also be set in place. When a situation occurs where a student is clearly high on drugs, what are the consequences? If these are communicated to both the homestay and also their legal guardian and/or parent then, in the event they are broken, you are afforded more leverage to remove them from your residence.
Do you Value Privacy?
Hosting a student can often mean that you will loose some level of privacy. You will need to accommodate for this as students will often want to practice their English they have just learned in school. Some of the activities you may have to compromise on are TV programs, family parties, having friends and dates coming over to your place. When you include the homestay in some of these social situations, they often have less of a problem with it.
When you would like to leave town for a few days on a vacation, there are issues to consider. Most homestays require you to prepare meals for the students and be available during meal times to have the student practice their English. You have a choice to invite the student to join you or work around it.
These are not the only concerns in this situation. The time you spend conversing with, and cooking and cleaning for the student could cut into the time you have for your own family and children. Your homestay could be included in your regular family activity, this way, your time will me more wisely spent.
